CMF is a specific discipline within industrial design that focuses on the development of a product’s color, material, and finish. Unwrap CMF shares bite-sized stories of CMF Design to inform and inspire those interested in this niche yet fascinating field, with digestible contents for anyone and everyone. Comments and inspirations are welcome!
During the CMF Q&A at TPDC ’21, a question was raised regarding my thoughts on Metaverse, so here I pull out the dusted draft to share my two cents. All comments and thoughts are welcome ?
The concept of Metaverse isn’t new. It refers to the man-made virtual world entered through mobile devices and computers, also referred to as “Second Life”. Aside from Metaverse, AR (augmented reality) has also changed the way people interact with both digital and physical worlds.
“With the arrival of digital age, is CMF still needed in the future?”
As soon as I landed in New York in September, I paid 14 visits within two weeks and finally found a place that I can call home. With the advancing technology, rental agents began to use AR to add computer-generated furniture pieces to apartment photos, showing the potential of the space after it is furnished.
Online viewing is convenient, but you won’t be able to find out unless in person about the neighborhood vibe, structural condition, brightness and spaciousness of the place. From a CMF perspective, aside from its visual value, CMF also includes the sensorial quality of a material – details that technology is unable to replace.
Here’s another point of view: unlike oil and mineral of limit cap, as digital resources are readily accessible and without an upper limit, it would be difficult to define what is precious in the world of Metaverse.
Therefore, I believe that CMF will not disappear because of Metaverse. On the contrary, CMF and other real-world industry will only become more valuable, and CMF Designers will be required to improve the quality of physical products more than ever. If the quality does not reflect the decency of the real world, it won’t compete with the virtual-ity.
Lastly, in quote: “In the future, the physical and the virtual world will become more as a choice “. Some will choose Second Life in Metaverse, and some will choose to stay away from the digital noises. And you, which world do you choose to dial up to?
