Ch10. Unwrapping CMF Design on Where to Lay Your Eyes On
Ch10.
CMF is a specialized area within industrial design that focuses on the development of products‘ color, material, and finish. Unwrap CMF shares bite-sized stories with digestible contents for anyone and everyone, inspiring curious minds about CMF Design. Enjoy learning? Chapter 8 talked about going out to look for inspiration, but…what details should be paid attention to when looking for design inspirations? Again, color is not the only element of CMF, so when looking for inspirations, don’t forget to aim for a wider range ?
Whether it is design exhibitions, art galleries, art museums, etc., 3D objects can present CMF elements including materials, colors, textures, and even lighting and layering effects, which is comparably more CMF-inspiring than flat 2D art pieces.
I would also encourage everyone to visit luxury brand stores in various industries, or high-end department stores like Lane Crawford whose products range from boutique fashion to home decorations.
The high selling price of luxury brands also means that their perceived quality have to be better than others. While we don’t have the same manufacturing budget or technical allowance as luxury products, it helps us to learn about the CMF details that can raise the perceived quality of a product and bring out its elegance and refinement.
In addition to this, the inspiration collected is also related to the material commonly used in your industry. Taking my personal experience as an example, due to the limitations caused by 4G and 5G signal antennas, a few years ago, the mobile phone industry began to switch from metal to glass and glass-like materials. Therefore, when we were collecting inspirations and prepping design proposals, we would pay more attention to the use of transparent materials across different industries or artworks.
While collecting inspiration, it is as critical to also evaluate the feasibility and risk of various visual elements in your own industry. Although let’s not rush to rejection right away, just keep in mind that these are unavoidable questions along the way.
Walk out and look for inspirations.
Bring your eyes and bring your brain! ?
LinkedIn | Instagram | Email ✉️

Via transparent materials, the iridescent effect of the table creates a colorful reflection with the on-table objects.

Inspirations from the various shadow shapes and patterns via light projected through transparent materials, chamfers, and textures.

The use of material, color, and texture combinations is comparably more suitable as inspirations for multi-part products.

The natural flowing texture produced by material mixture is unique and elegant, but may not be a suitable inspiration for all industries.

Compared with 2D art pieces, 3D works can better stimulate inspirations for color, material, and usages of light and shadow.
