I often get asked about how to pursue a career in CMF. But here is a reminder: CMF is NOT just a career path. See CMF as a skill set. You don’t have to be a CMF Designer to apply this knowledge in the workplace.
Let’s take logos as an example. The application of a logo involves cross-consideration between Industrial Designers, Branding teams, and Product Managers, among many others.
Industrial Designers view logos as integral parts of the product, focusing on how they integrate seamlessly with overall aesthetics.
Branding teams prioritize how logos enhance brand visibility and communicate the message.
Meanwhile, Product Managers consider factors like the stability of each logo treatment and whether investing in premium logos is worthwhile.
After decisions are made, the process of translating logos into production is just about to begin and many more work ahead of us. And that’s just logos alone. Every product has numerous details that require CMF attention.
If your company is sized to a scale where there are dedicated designers working on CMF details, these experts can easily take the lead in addressing CMF conversations and combining the needs from each stakeholder.
However, not all companies have the resources for a dedicated CMF Design team. Many have Industrial Designers, while others rely solely on Product Managers.
Regardless of your title, if you are involved in creating physical, consumer-facing products, CMF knowledge is invaluable for enhancing product development skills and elevating product quality.
So don’t shy away from CMF for not being titled as CMF Designers. CMF is for everyone and anyone!
