As a CMF Designer, do you ever feel the guilt over trashing mountains of rejected CMF samples and creating an environmental nightmare? While upholding CMF principals is our duty, rest assured that sustainable CMF solutions are still within reach. If this resonates with you, then join me on a journey with Gavin McGlynn and learn from his expertise in Design for Sustainability!

Back in the days, my initial understanding of sustainable design, green design, eco design – or however it may be called, was grounded in the very basic concept of using eco materials like wood or bamboo, followed by the awareness of recycling as a good civilian.

My limited knowledge in sustainable design used to make me feel powerless at the workplace, because the choice of materials and manufacturing processes are not individually decided by the design team. There are cost, technical feasibility, and supply chain considerations involving collaborative decisions with other teams within the organizations. Fortunately, during my time at Logitech, I had the honor to work with Gavin from the Design for Sustainability department, and learned that sustainable design goes beyond material choices and recycling – and there are design solutions that we, as designers, can take control of!

For example, by developing modular assembly or granting access to reassembly (e.g. screws instead of glues), we will enable product reusability and extend its lifecycle. Conversely, adding a topcoat to plastic products would immediately make them unrecyclable. That means, sustainable design also involves assessing the lifecycle of materials for repeatability. We want to avoid using additives or processes that block a material from transitioning to the next lifecycle.

Here is another example from Gavin: while polished details can enhance a product’s perceived quality, we want to be cautious about where we put them. Adding an in-mold polished finish to edges or large flat surfaces often necessitates the use of protective films to prevent scratching during production, assembly, and shipping. Just imagine the immense amount of production waste generated by millions of these tiny little films!! ?

Sustainable design is so many things! I am amazed by the broad range of opportunities it can embrace. To summarize, below are some actions we can take to achieve a balance between aesthetic and sustainability:

1⃣️ Choose materials wisely: We are not just talking about eco-friendly materials! By using single material or designing for easy disassembly, we can take materials apart effortlessly and maintain high material purity. This means higher efficiency and lower cost for recycling.

2⃣️ Choose colors wisely too: Did you know colors can also make a difference?! Generally speaking, darker plastic colors can contain a higher percentage of recycled pellets than pastel colors.

3⃣️ Minimize unnecessary processes: By minimizing the manufacturing process, we often could reduce carbon dioxide footprint and/or production waste.

4⃣️ Consider low-energy processes or renewable energy: Simply put, any process that heats up requires high energy and should be avoided if possible, or consider using renewable energy.

5⃣️ Plan for a strategic CMF limit range: A lower yield rate often results in increased production waste. While upholding CMF standards, let’s also plan strategically. For example, should we opt for a material with color-matching stability? Or, if a part is not designed to color-match with the rest of the product, could it be tolerated with a more “generous” but reasonable limit range? (Read: What is CMF limit range?)

And most importantly, NEVER use sustainability as a marketing tool. Celebrate it but don’t fake it.

Luckily, we are not alone on this journey. Global brands are increasingly investing in sustainable design, which originated from the Compliance & ESG departments that used to set the bar for environmental testing standards to comply with government regulations and prevent product risks. Driven by today’s highlighted eco objectives, many of them have evolved into dedicated Sustainability departments. Together with this joined force, we as CMF Designers are empowered with countless opportunities for sustainable CMF solutions in the future.

And remember, while there is often no perfect solution, but because one tiny change in a design can generate x 1,000,000’s of impact in production, and that means, one simple action with sustainability in mind will make a great difference ?

LinkedIn | Instagram | Email ✉️
